Root Canals

A root canal procedure is a vital dental treatment aimed at saving a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay or infection. The process begins with an initial examination where the dentist assesses the tooth’s condition, often aided by X-rays to determine the extent of damage to the pulp—the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

To alleviate pain and prevent further complications, local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected area before the procedure begins. The dentist then carefully accesses the interior of the tooth by creating an opening to remove the infected or damaged pulp. Specialized instruments are used to clean and disinfect the root canals thoroughly. This step is crucial as it eliminates bacteria and prevents the spread of infection.

Once the root canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material seals off the canals to prevent reinfection and provides structural support to the tooth. Depending on the extent of damage, a temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth while a permanent restoration, such as a crown, is prepared.

After a root canal, some mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. It is essential to follow post-procedure care instructions provided by your dentist, which typically include maintaining good oral hygiene practices—such as brushing and flossing regularly—and attending follow-up appointments to monitor the tooth’s healing progress.

Root canal treatment is highly successful in saving teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to infection or decay. By preserving natural teeth, root canals help maintain oral function and aesthetics while preventing the need for more extensive dental procedures in the future. If you experience persistent tooth pain or sensitivity, consult with your dentist promptly to discuss whether a root canal may be the appropriate treatment to restore your dental health.
